The Metrolog Scale

A 3D-printed measuring instrument that thinks like a calliper. Slide jaws for inner and outer dimensions. A linear scale for length. Designed in CAD, printed in PLA, finished by hand.

Notes from the bench

  • Sliding jaw for outer-dimension grip.
  • Reverse jaw for inner-dimension reading.
  • Vernier scale rated for 0.1 mm — within tolerance for desk work.
  • Printed in one part. No fasteners. No glue.
  • Calibrated against a steel reference before shipping.

Designed in Onshape

1,586 vertices, 3,160 faces. Modelled to actual millimetres — 165 × 28 × 9 mm — so the printed object lands at exactly the dimensions on the spec sheet.

Printed in PLA

Matte black, 0.2 mm layer height, single-part print with no support material on the working surfaces. The sliding action comes from the print, not from a fastener.

The vernier

Eight sub-ticks on the sliding jaw resolve to 0.1 mm. Generous for steel; honest for plastic. Within tolerance for the kind of work this is built for.

Calibration

Before each unit ships, the jaws are checked against a steel reference. If the reading drifts past 0.2 mm, the print is rejected.
